Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman Vol 1 Review

"Go, if you must discover new worlds and dangers that will refuse you reprieve. But no matter how far you run, or what evils befall you - I am with you. I love you daughter."

Sensation Comics is a treat for Wonder Woman and her fans that's been a long wait, finally giving the Amazonian princess and 1/3 of their Holy Trinity the return of the comic she debuted in. Much like Superman and Batman appeared in Action Comics and Detective Comics respectively and still have those books being printed and now Wonder Woman's Sensation Comics is one of DC's digital first series which are later sold in print copies. Part of me wants to say it's a shame this book isn't a printed monthly like Action and Detective however that might take away the unique charm of this book. It's also just nice to see DC give more attention (and books) to their leading lady, such as another digital books based on Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman and her being one of the leads in DC Comics Bombshells which comes out in August.

In Sensation Comics it showcases Wonder Woman in more of an anthology series focusing on her instead of being an ongoing story like most comics. Here each story has a different artist and writer giving an interesting spin on the Amazon Princess each in different settings that veteran comic fans can identify as different interpretations from the vast DC Comics' multiverse. Such as one story that mentions superheroine Mary Marvel existing in a different universe than Wonder Woman and Supergirl which was a thing in the old day of comics as well as different costumes from different eras. Or even some takes such as Wonder Woman in a band. However, this isn't a hinder from enjoying these tales despite the differences we are given fun, brave, and wise versions of Wonder Woman that show what her character is about which is sadly lost on many. Still vast knowledge of Wonder Woman isn't needed to enjoy these stories and work as great introduction to her character. The creators all utilize Wonder Woman's skills in different situations standing out all the more in different unique art styles. The art styles range quite a bit from more realistic, standard comic to more cartoony and even cutesy forms of the Amazon Princess and others, each working with their story's tone.

Wonder Woman's been a hard character explain for some, sadly with some writers and fans brushing her off as straw feminist stereotype or simply not knowing much about her compared to her Trinity teammates who have been given loads of media interpretations when Wondy's still mostly known for Lynda Carter and her role in the Justice League cartoon from early 2000s. This book is fun introduction that gives insights into what makes Wonder Woman tick as a character and in various fun, different ways. There's also guest appearances from other DC heroes (the first story is a return of fan favorite Oracle) and villains besides Wonder Woman's own rouges (here we're given a reminder just how creepy Dr. Psycho is) as well as the return of her fun and tough Golden Age friends Etta Candy who needs to be in more DC properties.

Recommendation:
Sensation Comics is a solid YA book and it has content and violence one would expect in an average T+ DC book but is handled in careful manners. As touched on earlier Wonder Woman is a character that many know of due to popular culture but also don't know much about due to not being utilized as much. Sensation Comics however gives readers nice, fun reads that don't rely heavy on complicated continuity and gives a look into what kind of a hero Wonder Woman is.
