"Everybody judges. Except for the duck who seeks only bread"
Review:
Octopus Pie is an endearing slice of life tale following two very different women the grouchy Eve who is disappointed at her life where almost everything goes wrong and deals with an unsatisfying job at an organic food store and her existential boyfriend breaking up with her as the story begins. And also there is her childhood...aquantence? Hanna, a laid back stoner with her at-home baking company...yes baking as in pastries. And the other one. They are soon joined by other characters such as third room mate and Hanna's mellow stoner boyfriend Mark. There's also Will, Hanna's friend/dealer and a sort of love interest for Eve and secondary characters such as Eve's co-workers from her job at the organic food store and her mother.
Octopus Pie follows the typical "odd couple" formula but doesn't stop it from being refreshingly funny and witty as we go through their dailylives. Interestingly, Hanna tends to be an unique and even rational influence in Eve's cynical, judgmental life along with other moments of them being there for each other. As this volume goes we see more of what happened in Eve's childhood indicating some problems she has today as well as an unexpected take on the relationship between pre-school Eve and Hanna when bits of it is finally revealed. Overall, Octopus Pie give readers a nice blend of comical moments on the people and the world around them, with some smart critique and heartfelt moments along with the art style being very fun and gives the character's an unique design and can be quite expressive.
Recommendation:
Despite the cartoony style, the content is very much for adults given discussions on sex, drugs, and even some slight nudity (though some good commentary from Hanna on the controversy on exposed female breasts). And even though Octopus Pie is an online comic the prints of the volumes is more than worth it to add to your shelves to introduce people to this fun comic and make them laugh.
