Unicorn on a Roll Review

A classic tale of a girl and her unicorn

Review:
(Thank you Netgalley for a copy!)
Dana Simpson's comics of a young girl named Phoebe and her unicorn friend, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils (yes that is her full name) who she first met by accidentally hitting her in the face with a small rock. The duo are a charming pair channeling a lot of Calvin and Hobbs humor and style that would help it click with anyone: girl or boy, child or adult. This volume, Unicorn on a Roll holds a series of comics that range from short, stand alone strips to continuing adventures such as what Unicorn parties are like or Marigold assisting with Phoebe's normal life problems the best she can. The characters are believable and enjoyable, Phoebe's a smart little girl who doesn't have many friends and dealt with taunting from a popular student named Dakota. She does get a non-human friend in Marigold who while vain is a caring friend with a wit to match Phoebe's and some useful or just odd Unicorn magic at her disposal. The art style is cute and expressive, very ideal for this kind of book.

Recommendation:

Ideal book for any age and gender, cute and witty and while I tried to stay away from My Little Pony comparisons it would be an ideal book with the franchise being as popular as ever. There's even a forward by My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic's Lauren Faust as well some nods in the book such as: Marigold explaining unicorns live up to their name and remarks how a unicorn show has them grow wings.
