Twisted Dark Vol 1 Review
A good example in realistic horror and disturbing trip through humanity's dark side and tragedies.
Review:
(Thank you Netgalley for a copy!)
To say Neil Gibson's first volume of Twisted Dark lives up to its name is quite the understatement. Several psychological thrillers written by Gibson but drawn by various others in realistic styles only in black and white like most horror comics. The unique thing about Twisted Dark is all its stories are set in a macabre but still plausible real world setting as is watching an episode of Law and Order: SVU. This anthology series doesn't showcase any supernatural or sci-fi scariness but instead shows us unsettling tales of mental illness, a man twisting the Islam religion to fit his goals, the dangers of being in a drug cartel, and other sides of human nature not many would want to see or think about. As mention earlier, there are different artists on the book but all draw in an appropriate style for the book and conveying the looks of fear and evil in the characters' faces. Most of the stories are seemingly stand alone but observant readers will notice mentions of other stories within others and see how they are connected in some way. The stories do their job at being creepy and keeping the reader on anticipation, though maybe some rely too much on the setting of being a simple or normal but still worrisome problem to revealing the troubling plot twist.
Recommendation:
Twisted Dark doesn't delve much in to gore, but with some violence, sex, and all around disturbing content matter, even if it's only mentions of some such as rape, makes this a good thriller book for the Adult shelves.
